Gandhi and Mallya

On Thursday something very interesting happened in New York city. After all the high drama, a few of Gandhi's last possessions were auctioned off in New York (The Story). A couple of things i want to point out here.

People tried to make money by selling stuff of a man who gave up all of his material possessions and practiced a simple life of high morals. And the Indian government screwed itself by getting into a legal position where it itself could not participate in the auction and instead ended up with one of its courts' ruling that the auction was illegal. Apparently they missed a key point there that the auction was being held in New York and not in Indian land and had no effect whatsoever on the planned auction.

In the meanwhile many wealthy Indian businessmen from all over the world got interested in Gandhi's stuff. The auction just took place as per the plan. And an Indian bought all that stuff and announced that he was giving all of that to Indian government. India's and Indian government's prestige was saved.

Now let me just try to remind you a few things about Gandhi. As i said before Gandhi led a very simple life. Also he strongly opposed use of alcohol in the society and led campaigns against it.

But fate had it that, the person who buys his stuff at the auction and save his country's prestige, be a showy prodigal who made his fortune by selling liquor. Some Irony here!

I haven't been able to attend good Indian cultural events after coming to the US. However, 2 events that i have truly enjoyed are UTD Indian Student Association's annual festivals - Sangam. It is a fabulous event. This year it took place on the evening of November 3rd. It started at 6:00PM and ended at 2:45AM. That's like almost 9 hours of continuous entertainment. All of the events at the festival were truly amazing. Students had practiced hard despite tight course schedules. The audience almost got frenzied at the end of the event.

I had an opportunity to cover the event. Here are some of the pics. I was better equipped this time around with my Nikon D80 and a rented SB800 speed-light. I got far better pictures with a fast speed-light compared to the ones that got when i covered ACM-MMS workshop 2007, held at Dallas a couple of months ago, where i was shooting with camera's built-in flash. I was amazed at the end of event for having shot 650+ pics; the max i have shot in such a time span. I was forced to stop shooting when i ran out of my camera battery. Another lesson learned!
